Theme

Author's Note: This piece about 3 different themes that come into the book, "Touching Spirit Bear".

Touching Spirit Bear is a well writing book by Ben Mikaelsen. It’s a great book for people who like violence. I would defiantly recommend this story to others. It really gets you going. It’s your there with him in the settings, making all these decisions. I would say that bravery and courage is the major theme in this book, but there is also survival and choices, for many different reasons.

I believe that the major themes in “Touching Spirit Bear” is courage and bravery. Cole, the main character,  has the courage to try and fight a tremendous white bear, for food, which leads on to him being partly dead. How many people to you know that will be brave enough to try and fight a bear for survival food. Survival is another one on our list, that comes up in this book a lot. He survives the bear attack, on an island, with no food! That’s bizarre.

Aside from courage and bravery, choices and decisions are another big theme in this book. We all have to make them, some good and some bad. His, on the other hand, were bad ones. He decided to throw some innocent kids face into the ground! That is an atrocious decision. Then he has the choice of either going to jail, or go live on an island and think about what he had done and why it was bad. Next on our list of decisions, he goes and tries to kill a colossal bear, which, of course, the bear will fight back, and almost kills him!

I feel like this book relates to the “Hunger Games”. I mean there is tons, and tons, of bravery and survival, even a lot of decisions have to be made! Katniss sticks up for her little sister, who gets chosen to fight for District 12, and says, “Take me instead!” Her and Peeta, another person who gets chosen, fight for their lives. In that case, they would both make the decisions on how to survive.

In conclusion, as you may have read, bravery and courage, choices or decisions, and survival, play a big part in this book. Along with Cole and the immense white spirit bear. All these themes are actually a important part in life. One day you might come across a bear, and you might need to mimic Cole and how he used his skills to survive.
